oVirt Installation

System Base Installation and prerequisits

Hardware requirements as defined by oVirt:

CPU: Dual-Core Memory: 4GB HDD: 25GB NIC: 1x 1Gbps

Operating-System: CentOS 7.0 Setting up the system as a standalone SSH-Server. No other tools required. During setup, make sure to set a FQDN of the type: host.domain.com (multiple subdomains may be fine)

After the installation disable firewalld and update the server. SELinux may be turned off, but this isn't required

oVirt installation

Install ovirt-repository:

  1. > yum install http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release41.rpm (current release as of 2017-04-18)

Install the engine

  1. > yum install ovirt-engine

Setup the engine:

  1. > engine-setup

Answer all questions with the defaults, except for the firewall-configuration, choose "no".

Format each datastore (here: /dev/sdb1)

  1. > mkfs.xfs -L datastore01 /dev/sdb1
  2. > mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/tmp
  3. > chmod 0755 /mnt/tmp
  4. > chown 36:36 /mnt/tmp
  5. > umount /mnt/tmp

Configuring oVirt via Web

Navigate your browser to your host via FQDN (IP doesn't work)

Under Hosts add your host via "new host" and provide name, ip (or fqdn) and root-password to the wizard.

Under Storage add your local-storage device as POSIX-storage. Specify the block-device.
